Finally, I have some good news to share regarding fishing the upper Rogue River and wildfire in S. Oregon. I made it out twice last week before the valley became inundated with smoke and brought bright steelhead to hand on both trips. My experiences and reports from other guides point to good numbers of fish in the upper River. Fishing under cloud cover or early/late certainly improves the bite as does the cooler temperatures forecasted to stick around for at least the next 7 days. We are very fortunate that the upper Rogue does not fall under the “emergency closure” affecting other rivers and streams in the region as water temperatures continue to range from the mid-50’s to the low60’s.
Also, firefighters continue to make progress on two stubborn wildfires near Canyonville and Glide. As a result, Medford air quality improved from unhealthy just two days ago to moderate today. Unfortunately, residents of Shady Cove still suffer from unhealthy air quality but the change from hazardous is certainly a welcome one and a sign that the effort against the Stouts Creek and Cable Crossing Fires are headed in the right direction.
I will follow up next week with another fishing and fire report. Given the air quality in Shady Cove I will stay off the water for a few more days. Looking ahead, I have the following dates available from mid-August through mid-September.
August 15th, 24th – 31st
September 5th-9th, 12th-15th
