Spring Fishing Report – Wild Waters Fly Fishing
Here at Wild Waters, it’s time to put away the steelhead rods and dust off the 5-weights. This winter has felt more like spring, and trout season is shaping up earlier than usual. The shift is already showing—our early trout trips have been productive.
Upper Sacramento River
The Upper Sac is currently flowing around 1,000 CFS—right in the sweet spot for spring fishing. Flows between 600–1,000 CFS are ideal, opening up nearly the entire river.
With a well below-average snowpack this year, we expect flows to drop sooner than normal. As that happens, the lower stretches will begin to warm, tightening the window for prime conditions below Pollard Flat. The next couple of months should offer some of the better fishing of the season—now is the time to take advantage.
Keep an eye on snowmelt and flow fluctuations, but overall, conditions are lining up beautifully.
McCloud River
The McCloud continues to be one of our most reliable spring fisheries, thanks to its consistent flows. After a brief bump last week, the river has already settled back into base flow and is shaping up nicely.
Early trips have produced solid results, and we’re seeing ideal conditions for dry-dropper and shallow nymph setups. With the lack of snow this year, access should be good—Ash Camp and Ah-Di-Na will be easy to reach.
As a reminder, the preserve remains closed until the last Saturday in April.
The past few seasons on the McCloud have been exceptional, and all signs point toward another strong spring.
Spring is here—earlier than expected—and the fishing is already delivering.
We have guide availability in April and May on both the Upper Sac and McCloud.
