Upper and Lower Sac Report

Upper Sacramento River

As I was guiding on the Upper Sac the other day, the wind blew and a bunch of leaves were flying off the branches, this reminded me that fall is coming and brought a smile to my face! Fall is my favorite time of year to be on the Upper Sac and better yet, all the nor cal rivers. The fishing is starting to pick up on the Upper Sac and the temps are dropping at night which is helping the fishing. Dry dropper rigs are working really good in the pockets as well as tight line nymphing. I had pretty good success on midge patterns under a dry.

Lower Sacramento

The Lower Sac has continued to fish great since the opener and should be on top of your list if you are planning to come up to nor cal. Clients have been blown away on how hard these rainbows fight and the average size we are getting to the net, its a pretty incredible place! and just think, the egg bite is just around the corner (October). The “Egg Bite” is another thing to look forward to on the Lower Sac and is one of the most popular times of year on this river. So, if you want to fish the egg bite, be sure to book your trips now and not wait! if you haven’t fished the egg bite, then you should try and make it out here. It is truly an awesome experience to see the huge salmon in the river spawning and doing their thing—O, and the big rainbows that are sitting behind them waiting for their protein filled eggs is why we are there! Back to the fish report: the rainbows are still loving the caddis patterns and small mayfly patterns are producing great numbers too! A certain fly I love on the Lower Sac is Hogans S&M nymph—give it a try!

Opening Days: September 5,6,7,11-15,18-21, 24, 26, 27 October: 1-6,10,11,17-19, 23-27, 30, 31
