Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Truckee RiverFeb 8, 20181 min read

Matt Koles Reports on 2.5.2018

Locked into high pressure.

Mild weather for this time of year on the Truckee River. Feels about like April. Of course this mild weather warms up the water and the trouts get more active.

Flows are still pretty good in both states despite the lack of snow.  Seems like they’re holding water back in anticipation of another bad winter.  This warm weather has got some bugs pop’n. I’ve seen skwalas and blue wings in both states. Shit, probably see some caddis too if it stays this warm.

Fish are slowly moving out of the frog water and putting themselves into parts of the the river that hold more bugs. Riffles, drop offs etc. Warmer weather gets the bugs going and fish are well aware of this. Of course, it’s still winter and fish are not in the pocket water.

Mainly I’ve been guiding through the Nature Conservancy on the lower Truckee River. Mainly I’ve been streamer fishing. Fun to work those banks and see what chases.
