Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Truckee RiverMay 10, 20182 min read

Matt Koles reports on 5.10.18

Good weather, good fish’n here on the Truckee River.

Gotta love spring. Great weather, plenty of fat healthy fish, and the Giants are playing good baseball, couldn’t get any better. Plenty of water in the river too.

I’ve still been floating down on the Nevada side, streamer fishing mainly in the Nature Conservancy section. Slow streamer fishing, but still getting or moving a fish of a lifetime every trip. STAY COMMITTED. I use to mainly get big rainbows down there, occasionally a big brown, but nowadays seems the Browns are bigger than before the drought. Go figure. Everyone likes a big brown trout. Could stay good down there all summer, just gotta hit it early, gets hot in the desert. My old ass doesn’t like to bake in the sun anymore. Flows are still high down there so it really helps if you have a boat. Wade fishing is kinda tough at these flows.

Up here it’s good too. Clear and still kinda big and cold. Once this water warms up a bit more, it kinda goes off for a few weeks. Still hasn’t happened yet, but if it stays this warm, soon. March browns, and blue wings kinda making up the bug list. Still some skwalas in the mix as well. Nymphing with those, or on a cloudy day, maybe you’ll get lucky and get a fish or two on top. Most of our water is still coming out of Lake Tahoe.

So should be a good month of May.
