Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Truckee RiverJul 17, 20181 min read

Matt Koles reports on 7.11.18

Heating up here on the Truckee River.

Figured the heat of summer would kick in at some point. High’s are near 90 here in the Hirsch, and just plain hot in Reno. The river is fishing well in the mornings and shitty mid-day. Like I always say this time of year, take a break and come back right before dark.

Mudbugs and stones and pmds, and lots and lots of caddis. Nymphing of course is the way to go. Down and dirty and in the fast pocket water. Look for the cut outs, or slots, or the letter V. That’s where fish are this time of year. Tight line nymphing is the most productive way, not always, but usually that’s the best. You just have to get in there, break the river down and not be afraid to wade around. Trouts can hold in water you wouldn’t even think of. Most folks walk right past the good water this time of year. It’s a good time of year to rack up some numbers in the pocket water.

Flows are great and should stay great into Labor Day.

I have some spots for the tight line nymph clinic on July 28th.
