Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Arrow Thin Left Icon

Matt Koles reports on 7.27.18

Good fishing happening on the Truckee River.

Hot in afternoons, cool in the mornings. Good flows, and good numbers, if you can wade and pick through the pocket water.

We are getting a little monsoonal push. Thunderstorms in the afternoons which feels really nice. It has been in the mid-90’s all week here in the Hirsch, Sacramento kinda hot. Feels good to cool down a bit.

The protein side of the menu seems to be in effect. Crayfish and big nocturnal golden stones. Crayfish molt about 4 times a year and are available year round, but summertime always seems to be crayfish time. Soft-shell goodness. We get big stoneflies too, so good to rig big and small. Pat’s rubber leg, or my skipper stone, or a stone daddy, or dead drift crayfish with a smaller G-6 or birds nest or something like that. Lots of crayfish patterns and stonefly patterns out there. You can see mine if you fish with me, ha ha. I like mine to sink. I don’t like the big bunny style claws on most patterns.

It’s been good everywhere on the river. California and in Nevada.
