Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Truckee RiverMay 14, 20151 min read

Matt Koles, Gilligan’s Guide Service

Can you believe it has snowed more the last month than pretty much all year? Anything helps, but it ain’t gonna do much.

Flows are about 280 here in the Hirsch, higher down towards state line, and getting way low through Reno. It’s way low up along Glenshire and above that way too. Flows seem like all I’ve been talking about lately, low flows. Hopefully next year, I’ll be talking about too high of flows.

For now things haven’t changed much except much cooler weather. Same bugs and things and rigs and all that good stuff. Everything is pop’n and way way earlier than normal. Haven’t seen the ants yet, but next warm day I’m sure they’ll be out. I’m waiting on that pale morning dun hatch, love those creamy yellow orange mayflies.

With this rain and snow and way below spring flows you best bring your dry fly box, maybe the streamer box as well. Of course we’ll mostly get them with the old tight line rig and dry dropper rig.

The fishing is really good right now all over the Tahoe-Reno area.

If you like to do some creek’n now is the time too. Creek’n is good all over Tahoe right now. Get a little 2 weight and a elk hair caddis and have it. Take a look at a Tahoe National Forest map and see what’s out there.
