Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Truckee RiverMay 27, 20162 min read

Matt Koles Reports on 5.22.2016

Lot’s and lots of water. That’s the word this year. Been about 5 since we’ve been able to say that.

The Truckee River is above 800 cubes again here in the Hirsch. Near 1000 at state line. Flows have increased out of Boca. Good news for the Little Truckee, flows are about 200 coming out of Stampede now. Yes, the Truckee River is big. The T is the same size as say the wade sections of the Madison. If you’ve been to the Madison than you know what I’m talking about.

We’re sticking a lot of nice fish these last two weeks. 100’s of inches of fish a week, no joke. Go here. I’ve had good anglers though, and I’m very comfortable guiding the river at these high flows. We’ve been fishing all types- dry with multiple droppers,(New Zealand style), indicators, streamers, and tight line nymphing. I carry multiple rods to fish multiple ways. Pro tip of the week, get yourself a 10 footer for the Truckee River. Why guys at fly shops sell folks a 9 foot rod, I have no idea. They probably don’t fish much. With a 10 footer you are so much versatile.( on any river here in Ca) If you come fish with me, you’ll see why.

So the fishing is fair. Lot’s of guys getting skunked and a few catching some nice fish. Just the way it is this time of year. Flows need to drop down into the 500 range on the lower sections here for any real good fishing to happen. Mid -June and on is going to be awesome this year.
