Truckee Fly Fishing Report

Truckee RiverAug 9, 20181 min read

Matt Koles reports on 8.9.18

A tad cooler, but still hot, and some days lots of smoke on the Truckee River.

Sad for communities affected by the fires. I think most of Northern California is under a blanket of smoke. Some days are better than others in the Tahoe/ Reno area depending on which way the winds are blowing.

The fishing is good in the mornings on the Truckee River. Crayfish, stones, caddis, and smaller mayflies. Nymphing through the pocket water is the way to go with the above mentioned nymphs. Tight line nymping is the best rig. We’ve had some fish come up and eat a hopper or two this week which is also a fun way to fish. Flows are great and the river is in really good shape from Lake Tahoe down into Nevada.

The river is bathtub warm from Lake Tahoe to Boca inlet, and again from Reno down through the Nature Conservancy. Fish early if you fish those sections of river and carry a thermometer. From Boca we have about 200 cfs of cold water down into Verdi NV keeping the river nice and cool.

Nights should get cooler as we head into middle August. We’ll have hot afternoons and cool nights. Fishing will be good in the mornings.
