Upper Sacramento & McCloud
Dry-dropper rigs have been one of the most enjoyable ways to approach these rivers. It's a stealthy and effective method for covering the entire water column. Golden stone dries paired with a couple of Perdigon nymphs underneath have been producing consistently. Many of the faster pocket-water sections are loaded with healthy, hard-fighting fish.
Fall River
Bucko has been all over the river this past week. He sent me a video of one of the most impressive PMD spinnerfalls I've ever seen. I believe he shared it on social media if you'd like to check it out. The hatch was on the uppermost stretch of the river.
Around Circle 7, the PMD activity has been excellent. It's one of those times when keeping the dry-fly rod in your hand and leaving the nymph rod in the boat can really pay off. Of course, there are still plenty of fish willing to eat below the surface as well.
Lower Sacramento
The Lower Sac has been as consistent as we've seen in the past three years. That said, it's still a game of knowing where to be and when. The fish are heavily keyed in on hatch activity right now. Find the bugs and you'll often find the better fish.
PMDs, various caddis species, and baetis are all on the menu. The caddis fishing, in particular, has been a lot of fun. It can change by the day—or even by the hour—which keeps things interesting. We're excited to see how these summer evenings shape up and where the next surface feeding frenzy develops.
Stripers & Shad
While Hogan has been back in the boat chasing stripers, Adam has been spending his evenings harassing shad. Both have been putting together some stellar days.
Hogan has been finding plenty of keeper-sized stripers holding in mid-depth water. He's also had a few shots at larger fish, along with plenty of follows. Every cast has the potential to be a personal best when you're striper fishing, and the next couple of months should only get better.
Adam has discovered a few shad spots from the boat that are producing incredible numbers of fish—and he's had them almost entirely to himself.
