Putah Creek Fly Fishing Report

Current flow : 496 cfs 

Putah has been fishing great lately. The flows have been fluctuating quite a bit. Last week flow went down to 396 cfs. As the summer comes to an end, the flows will start to drop more consistently, but for right now we’re still using high flow tactics. We’re using longer leaders with more weight to get down to the fish and an indicator with 2 to 3 flies under your weight. Fishing tail outs, drop offs and slower water sections are also producing good fish throughout the day. Your typical small Putah Creek flies are working great.

Size 16 Fox’s Caddis Pupa 

Size 20 Hogan’s S&M Nymph

Size 20 Micro May 

Size 16 San Juan Worm

In the coming months, until our voluntary closer starting December 1st, we will see the flows start to drop. Our tactics will change when everything slows down. We’re going to use shorter leaders and less weight. Your drag free drift presentation starts to really matter. Putah trout are always extremely picky on what bugs they eat, especially when the water is slower and lower. With the lower flows, they will have more time to make a decision on what bugs they’re going to eat. Keeping your flies in the drift, looking as natural as possible, and being consistent in your drift is the key to success on Putah Creek!
