Monterey Surf Fly Fishing Report

Evan Praskin reports on 7.31.18

What a gorgeous weekend we had over here in the Monterey Bay! The weather was comfortable, the wind was low, and the swells were mellow… almost too mellow depending on what beach you chose. The Stripers have been spread out and harder to find the past few weeks though fish are being caught, just prepare to walk for them.

On Saturday we had Steph Vandenbrandhorninge and retired Navy diver Eric Rutledge out from Morgan Hill and I gotta say that these two guys made for an awesome morning session. Both of them brought their A game and charged the surf with a great attitude. Steph had one of the smoothest cast I’ve seen in the surf laying out cast after cast right into the zone.

Eric, despite snapping his rod early on, picked up the two-hander and was launching that heavy Clouser like he’d been using it for years. The morning was filled with great stories, lots of laughs, and of course some nice fish. Eric was the hot stick of the day bringing in 4 perch and 1 very nice surf striper that bent the method spey in half! “CORKED!” Great morning, great group of guys, and some great fish. Thanks for coming out guys, hope to see you both out there soon. We are starting to get close to the part of the summer when the number of striper drop, but the big mommas start showing up.

August/ September are great months to have a chance at landing one of those trophy Stripers we all dream of. Give us a call to get on the books and come enjoy what Monterey Bay has to offer. Hope everyone has a great week, we’ll see
