Lower Sacramento Shad & Striper Fly Fishing Report
Capt. Hogan Brown reports on 5.24.18
Lower Sacramento Shad
Fishing has been fair to good at times. Schools are small but every once in a while we have been hitting a large school and getting into some good numbers. Most evenings it has been good but not great. Average fish is a good size fish and best bite has been 4-7pm.
Lower Sacramento Backwater
Fishing is heating up as the sloughs have warmed and bass are looking up for frog patterns, smaller bait fish fished on floating lines, and popper dropper rigs. There are a few carping cruising around but most are focused on spawning and not chasing flies. Have not gotten into many smallmouth bass yet but I am sure it is only a matter of time before they move into their summer haunts.
Lower Sacramento Striper
Fishing has slowed down for the migratory fish out of colusa and in the pockets where there are no shad in the upper river fishing resident and migratory fish can be good. I have hit some nice schoolie size fish but we have been having to cover large amounts of water to find fish that are not stuffed on shad.
