Lower Sacramento River Fly Fishing Report

Lower Sacramento RiverMay 4, 20171 min read

Hogan Brown reports on 5.4.17

Lower Sacramento River Striper fishing - There has been epic to poor fishing for migratory fish through Chico, depending on the conditions and day. Clarity, flows, and finding fish - like most fishing - are the key factors. Resident fish are feeding and around but since resident fish don’t hang in big schools and clarity is only about a one foot, finding those 1-4 fish groups of residents is a bit tougher than the huge schools of migratory fish. Fishing should continue to improve over the next month and we should have an amazing June-Oct river striper season.

Shad fishing on the Sac - saw a few pelicans around yesterday which means there should be some shad around. I also saw one angler fishing at Rd 48. I personally don’t have much confidence fishing for shad with poor clarity. Shad need to SEE the shad fly and if they can only see a few feet in front of them I have a hard time having faith in catching large numbers.
