Lower Sac Shad and Striper Report

Lower Sac Shad fishing
Fishing has been improving. Not huge numbers but some bigger females have shown up and are mixed in with the males…about 5-1 ration from what I can tell with anglers getting a nice 3-4lb female a night. There seems to be more fish around then a week ago but that can change any day. The heat has pushed the bite back a bit but not to much. Best fishing is still about 5-7pm. I have found little reason to stay until dark and battle the mosquitos. Best set up is a 250grain head on a 7wt. Flows are LOW so there is plenty of wade fishing opportunity if anglers want to get out of the boat.
Lower Sac Striper Fishing
Fishing has been fair. Had a few mixed bag trips fishing for stripers, largemouth/blugill, and then shad in the evening. One day a client caught 5 species of fish in one day - Blue Gill (nice big one), Spotted Bass, Striped Bass, Shad, and Pike Minnow. Fish are averaging about 3-8lbs - standard schoolie size fish - most of the bigger fish are eating shad or stuffed to their gills with shad sulking on the bottom I think. The hotter weather should only improve fishing and over the next few weeks the shad should thin out and the bigger fish will get going. First part of June last year was very good fishing with multiple fish over 20lbs coming to the boat.
