Joe Garza Reports on Septmeber 10th, 2026
Water temperatures at Eagle Lake have dropped to the 66°F, and the fish are starting to get more active for us fly fishermen. Early mornings, fish are feeding between 3ft and 10ft. I have been using my floating line with a 12' leader and a #10 Wiggle Tail (Orange and Rust). After 9am, I have been running indicators with a #8/10 Balanced Leech (orange and rust) and a #12/14 Chironomid (Red or Black) or #12/14 Scud (Olive or Tan) at 25 ft.
Intermediate and full sinking lines have been productive between 20 ft. and 40ft. Stripping a Wiggle Tail or trolling fly (Tui Chub, Orange, and Rust) size #6/8 have been the best producers.
Trout Spey (from shore) has not started to be productive yet. However, this will change as soon as water temperatures dip below 64°F, and fish start moving to shallower water in search of Tui Chub.
The water levels on Eagle Lake have dropped significantly over the summer months. Take extra caution at the boat ramp when launching your boats. At these levels it is extremely easy to drive your trailer off the ramp and get stuck. With the fly fishing starting to turn on early this season, the fishing up here during the Fall and Winter looks to be red hot. If you are doing the California Heritage Trout Challenge, now is the time to plan your trip! I have limited spots available this season between October 15 and December 15.
