Deschutes and Owyhee Fly Fishing Report

Deschutes RiverSep 22, 20171 min read

Deschutes River Anglers Report on 9.22.2017

Deschutes

Trout : If you are still in need of a trout fix this is a great time to hit the Deschutes. Most of the people have switched gears and are now fishing for steelhead. So if you prefer trout you will have the bulk of the spots all to yourself. The trout have seen a ton of different fly patterns by this time of year, so this is a good time to be fishing attractor patterns. You will also want to have some bigger caddis dry flies and nymphs with you because the October Caddis are starting to show up in good numbers. Back eddies and riffles is where you want to spend most of your time.

Steelhead
The steelhead numbers on the Deschutes as well as the entire Columbia basin are definitely down this year. The good news is so are the amount of people fishing for them. The steelhead fishing so far has been pretty good due to the lack of fishermen.

Owyhee

We just finished up our last few days on the Owyhee. This summer was one of our best fishing seasons we’ve had on the Owyhee in several years. If you didn’t make it this season you don’t want to miss out in 2018. We start trips on the Owyhee in mid March and go through most of April for the Skwala Stone fly hatch. Then we come back over again in August and September for the Hopper and Mayfly season.
