Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report

Truckee RiverJul 2, 20151 min read

Matt “Giligan” Koles Reports:

Air temps and water temps are way up everywhere in the Truckee Area. Outta sight daytime temps, record breaking type shit the last few weeks.

Again: DO NOT FISH THE TRUCKEE RIVER!

Trout: Been fishing some lakes (sorry, I can’t tell where) and doing good. Calibaetis are still hatching on some of the lakes I’ve been hitting, and been getting some good midge fishing in early on top too.

Warmwater: Carp is the ultimate challenge on a fly rod and they’re everywhere on the Nevada side of the Truckee River, mainly East of Reno. It is ok to target carp. They are a warmwater fish and thrive in the shallow warmwater- frogwater type stuff. They like crayfish type flies, and they are super hard to catch. You sight fish for them. If and when you do catch one, they will fight harder than just about any fish you will ever catch on your fly rod. A fun half day trip if you’re up for the challenge.

Other than that, just ain’t much to report.

I can’t give away the few spots I do have to guide on, but there is some stuff out there.

Enjoy the 4th and stay off the Truckee River trout for now.
