Matt “Gilligan” Koles Reports on 7.12.2017

Flows have lowered below 1000 k on the Truckee River. 910 today in the Hirsch to be exact.
Been a long time coming.
Hot is the word up here. Been pretty hot this summer. Been over 90 every afternoon here in the Hirsch. Your best bet is to fish in the morning until noon, and again before dark. There’s a fire right now below Farad East of Truckee. I-80 is closed in both directions. Probably some asshole with a cigarette butt. 500 acres have burned and it’s windy as hell…Most fires burn East down the canyons, we’re ok up here.
Caddis, caddis, caddis and more caddis. Crayfish time too. Get some green G-6’s at the hardware store, or at the shop in Reno-and hang one anywhere on any rig your fishing. Make sure to swing them at the end of the drift. Caddis swim good you know.
I’m just getting into a lot of my normal summertime zones. Still a bit high, but getting real fishy. Normally, I’d been in them a month ago.
Give a listen to my latest podcast at with Jim at the Reno Fly Shop.
