Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Arrow Thin Left Icon

Matt Koles reports on 10.4.18

Finally a break in the weather. Fall is here on the Truckee River.

Near record high’s in Reno this past weekend and now very cool fall like weather in the Truckee Meadows, and Truckee/ Lake Tahoe area. Time to get the wood stacked.

Very tough fishing at times, and now pretty good fishing. Those last few weeks of September were hot. It’s nice to actually have some cool, kinda cloudy days. I was mostly down floating the Nevada side, we got some fish, but man, we worked hard some days. I expect much better fishing now.

You will have one really solid month of fishing. October as some like to say, is the second season. A really good month all over the West to fly fish. November ain’t bad either.

Things should really fire off on the Nevada side now of the Truckee River with some cool weather. Especially out East through the Nature Conservancy. Trouts should move out of the fast oxygenated water and settle up along some banks, runs, etc. Essentially they will be less spread out and in more dependable places. The streamer fishing will get good down in there. We’ll move from catching mostly rainbow to all brown trout.

Same thing with the trouts on the Californian side of the Truckee River. Look for them to be in more dependable places. Runs, pools, etc. Get the streamers out and see if you can get that brown trout of a lifetime. I get more in the spring, around here, but we get a few big ones in the fall too. You actually might get some fish on top. Might have a few good bwo days.

I still have a few spot left for the Advanced Fly Fishing Clinic this month on the 27th and 28th.
