Truckee River Fly Fishing Report
Matt Koles, Gilligan’s Guide Service
Milder weather, good fishing again in the Lake Tahoe-Truckee-Reno area. We had a little bit of a cold snap at the beginning of the week, but now Juneuary is back, and the fishing is above average once more for this time of year on the Truckee River. Even the California side of the river is fishing good, usually something I stay away from this time of year because of the cold. Mostly, I’d be spending my time in Nevada, but there’s really no need too. Fishing on both sides has been pretty good.
I like to wait until the water warms. Nymph up in water about 3-5 feet deep and swing some streamers with the switch in the deeper stuff. Pretty much my gig until the water warms and the fish head into pocket water and fast slots.
What’s the fishing like in the winter? Well, it ain’t summer, but the good thing fish on average are bigger than their summer friends. Big trout need to eat all the time, they need the calories, small trout, not so much. When you do get them this time of year they’re probably above average, and on the Truckee River, above average is well above average.
Come on up for the Pyramid Lake Clinic on the 31’st, gonna be fun and we have 2 spots left. We’ll get you set for spring fishing out at the lake, something you do not want to miss out on.
