Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Arrow Thin Left Icon

Matt Koles, Gilligan’s Guide Service

Looks like the May monsoons have ended. We had rain in and around Truckee for the last 10 days. Heavy, heavy rain at times adding a lot of water to our area and yes, the Truckee River did get high and muddy the other evening and still has some tint to it.

TMWA was going to use their drought reserves the first week of June, but now looks like it will be pushed back a few weeks. That is all good news. They are going to use more drought reserves this summer and unlike last year Independence Lake will be drawn down, so maybe the river won’t be as bad as early as everyone is predicting, we’ll see. The rain really saved our asses for a while.

The caddis are out on the Truckee River and we have had some good fishing on both the dries and the pupa.  The G-6 should be on your leader at all times starting now, serious. Most of the area fly shops have them. Other bugs are pmds, a few green drakes, and golden stones. The fishing the next few weeks should be pretty amazing on the river and you may get lucky, round a corner and see pods of fish rising, it’s that time of year.

Flows are about 280 or so in the Hirsch and much higher towards stateline. Not bad really.
