Truckee River Fly Fishing Report
Matt “Gilligan” Koles Reports on 9.15.2015
Looks like the heat wave has broke. Likely we won’t see 80’s or 90’s in Truckee until next May.
Very good news out on the Little Truckee River, flows are up to 115 cfs. After being at 16 cfs for the enhancement work, flows are back up and the fish are good and fat and healthy. Baetis are pop’n, along with small fall caddis. The caddis are about a sz #16. I imagine some big browns will start pushing out of Boca and start making their way up the river with these flows. The fall fishing will be very good out on the LT.
The Truckee River is not looking to bad. It is flowing at about what it was this time last year. We had a spike up to 128 cfs here in Hirschdale, but now it is back to just around 100 cfs. Most of the water is coming out of Donner Lake, and flows are down to 20 cfs out of Boca. It is most definitely safe to fish the river from Boca, down to Verdi Nevada. With flows up out of Donner Lake it should be safe to fish along the Glenshire stretch, though, I doubt there’s really much happening up there after being almost dry the last few months. Don’t let people who don’t live in the area tell you what conditions are like up here.
Pyramid Lake opener is right around the corner. Remember, I’ll be at the Reno Fly Shop on the 23rd this month at 6:00, doing a free tech talk. Also, Doug O and I have two clinics coming up on October 31st, and November 14th.
