Truckee River Fly Fishing Report
Matt Heron Reports on 2.25.2016
After a bit of lull a few weeks ago, the Truckee has officially turned on again recently. Flows below Boca/Hirshdale have been around 400 cfs. the last few days and water temps have been between 38-44 depending on run off and air temps. Ti’s as good as it gets for February.
Bugs have been pretty much the same over the last month. Bobber fish as by far been the go-to. We’ve been getting fish on a little bit of everything. Midges 18-22s, worms, winter stones, rubberlegs, and baetis, baetis and more baetis. I would go with the normal blacks, olives and browns. No secrets here. We also got a few fish getting down and dirty with streamers.
Getting fish to eat dries have been few and far between. Midges have been going off daily, we’ve seen lots of winter stones the last few days and a few baetis. We can only assume our skwalas aren’t far off. It’ll be nice to throw some big stuff next month.
We’re seeing some of the best winter fishing of the season as we speak. Give us a shout! We’ll be leaving for Cuba soon, but have several guide openings over the next few weeks. Also, we’ll be at the Pleasanton Fly Fishing Show this weekend with a booth, and presenting on the Truckee each day. We’d love to have you swing by to check it out and give you an in person report!
