Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Truckee RiverMar 17, 20161 min read

Matt “Gilligan” Koles reports on 3.17.2016

I think it’s safe to say, the Truckee River is back.

We have big flows and a big snowpack once again, yes, going to be an awesome year. When we are on, or near our average snowpack in our neck of the woods, that’s a lot of f’ing snow. It will all come down eventually.

Flows are still in the 800 range in the Hirsch, and a bit higher down below. That’s a big river for most folks, but if you fish the edges and find the softer lyes, you should find fish. Air temps have warmed and it should explode with bugs this week. Skwala stones, winter stones, and blue wing olives. I wouldn’t expect much on top, but if you nymph and streamer fish, well. All of my fishing has been on the Cali side of the river, with the exception of the Verdi area in NV, and the fishing has been very good.

We are heading into a fun time to fish the Truckee River, spring.
