Monterey Surf Fly Fishing Report

Monterey Surf

We have been getting out a lot these past few weeks and the fishing has been great for the most part. Last weekend we had plenty of perch on the deck with a few nice stripers in the 16- 22" class.

These fish have most likely washed out of the local tributaries into Monterey Bay and are cruising the shore chowing on sand crabs. I’m starting to see a few more stripers being caught in the SF bay and we hope they are not far from making their way down here! The run is getting a pretty late start this season so fingers crossed this isn’t a low producing striper year.

These last few days we hit the surf rain or shine. On St Patty’s day that was exactly the case… rain, shine, rainbows, wind, then more rain.
Had a couple guys out from Nevada who put in work to get a bite on Saturday, a lingering swell made things pretty tough with plenty of energy left in the surf. We made a move to the calmer Santa Cruz side and had much better seas and action.

Sunday was the day to be out! Beautiful clear sky’s, low wind, birds working the surf, dolphins cruising all over making it a pretty eventful session.
The perch decided to eat on the incoming tide (High@1230PM) and seemed to feed even better during the outgoing. Everyone caught fish and had a great time fly fishing the surf. Our weekends are booking up fast so be sure to lock in your dates soon. Hope everyone had a great St Patricks Day, we’ll see you on the beach!
