Lower Yuba River Fly Fishing Report

Jan 14, 20151 min read

Hogan Brown, Hogan Brown Fly

I was on the Lower Yuba 2 days this last week and flows remain low, about 550cfs. Water clarity is still off color, about 1’-1 ½’ of disability. Fishing was fair. I did not see any skwallas flying around but have hear from other anglers and guides they have seen a few but nothing that would classify as “they are out”. Most of my fish have still been coming on egg patterns, rubber legs, and mayfly nymphs. I have not started fishing the smaller baetis match the hatch type of nymphs more the #14-#12 attractor style mayfly nymphs. I have also in the runs that set up for it been swinging flies on light switch rods with intermediate tips. Best swung flies are bigger soft hackles and patterns that resemble smaller salmon smolt.

Also spent 2 days chasing stripers on the Sac outside of chico. Water is low and clarity is about 6-10"…not good. Black flies with rattles are a must. I had a few grabs but no clean hook ups. Fish are VERY lethargic with cold water and air temps. Slow retrieves and patience is key.
