Lower Sacramento River Fly Fishing

Lower Sacramento RiverJul 21, 20161 min read

Hogan Brown Reports on 7.21.2016

Been guiding mainly the Lower Sac for stripers the last week (4 Days between Princeton and Woodson) but also spent 2 days Floating the Lower Sac for Trout between Anderson and Barge Hole. Striper fishing has been fair to good. The big fish are eating and most days we are getting a shot at a double digit fish and a good mix of shakers and fishing in the 18-20" bracket. Weeds are slow growing this year and most fish are coming on heavy sink lines fished in 4-18’ of water. Fish seem to be moving in and out of feeding areas throughout the day and without weeds are not holding for very long. Top water fishing right at dark has been fair to good with most anglers getting a good blow up or two and a bunch of slashes from smaller fish.

Trout fishing has been good for the summer. I had heard that the key was to fish late into the afternoon/evening and catch the caddis hatch but I have been starting at about 8am and fishing a normal day and fishing has been good throughout the day. Around 2pm fishing seems to slow down a bit but not bad. Fishing in the morning has been good and fish are eating stones, caddis patterns, and the occasional mayfly nymph.
