Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report

The tout fishing on the Lower Sac remains stellar. The pressure is getting lighter on the river and the fish are still grubbin’. We’ve seen big Salmonflies, little Yellow Sallies, Hydropsyche Caddis, and PMDs all coming off throughout the day in pretty good numbers. There have been boat loads of PMDs coming off the past few evenings, with a few fish starting to look up. The average size of fish on the river right now is impressive, especially up in town. There are a ton of quality fish that inhabit this big tailwater. I took a few groups out last week that hadn’t fished the Sac before and they were blown away. The flows are up 7,500 cubes which is just about perfect. Flows between 7k-10k are ideal for spring and summer fishing. Check out some more photos from the river by clicking the link below:

Shad Report - Shad are in on the Lower Sac and up through Chico, CA. Clients have been hooking 15-50 shad and evening just depending on the pods moving through on a  given day. Most fish are small males with only a few larger females in the mix. Flows have come up but there is still plenty of wade options at all the normal spots for the wade fishermen. Shad fishing is about 2 weeks early this year so plan your shad trips accordingly.
Lower Sacramento Bass/stripers - Bass fishing has picked up over the last week in the sloughs and back waters. Top water fishing has been good as fish are eating frog patterns fished tight to structure and floating bait fish patterns in the open water. Bigger bass are also cruising deeper water up top looking for bait fish and a small weightless bait fish pattern fished on a floating line is getting the bigger fish that won’t commit to a popper. Striper fishing has slowed down as the shad have shown up and stripers gorge on shad.
