Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Matt Koles reports on 3.9.17

Another big round of snow. Got about 2.5 feet here in the Hirsch, again.

Good news is that we have sunshine in the forecast for the next week! Just a little bit of spring please.

Flows are still big at about 1,200 cfs here, and slightly higher down lower. More manageable up top, below town. Despite the higher flows the fishing is really good. Below 1,500k is pretty doable. We now have a lot of water releasing out of Lake Tahoe. This is accounting for about 500 cfs into the river. Flows have not been that big out of Tahoe in a long, long time.

Folks have been getting some good fish despite the higher water. Flows should continue to lower, but remember there’s lots of water in the snowpack and that will all eventually melt. That and they will have to release water out of all the reservoirs all spring to make room for all that water. Get used to the Truckee River being high through June.

For now, streamers and nymphs are kinda the game. The streamer rig will often out fish the bobber rig this time of year, so usually that is how I fish. Worms, eggs, stones, and anything with a bead on it that’s small and black for the nymph rig. Streamers should be something looking like a sculpin, or small minnow, baitfish.

There is one spot left for the streamer clinic on April 1st. Also, I will have a tight line nymph clinic on the 21st of April.
