Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Truckee RiverJul 21, 20171 min read

Matt Koles Report on 7.19.2017

Flows are now average on the Truckee River.

Mid-July was my guess, and now flows are at right near 500 cfs here in the Hirsch. Just about average, normal mid-July flows.

Last week was a little weird with the dropping flows. This week should be better as trouts will have adjusted to the change. They should be in the fast pocket water, slots. The water is warming fast now with the drop in flows and trouts will need fast oxygenated water.

It is hot, and has been a hot ass summer up here. Your best bet is to fish mornings and late evenings. I will not do any full day trips until it cools down. Just way too hot. Not good on you, or the fishes.

So good luck, things are going to get way tougher now. You will need to know how to read the water and find out where these trouts live in late summer. You may have come up here a few months ago and got lucky in some slow water around here, but now these fish are spread out and finding them is not always easy.
