Shasta Lake Fly Fishing Report

Shasta Lake
Has been fishing great, very large numbers of fish can be brought to hand right now. Water temps have been ranging from high 40’s to low 50’s. The average fish will go 1-1.5 lbs and we are finding the occasional one above 3 lbs. The majority of fish caught are Spotted Bass, with a few Smallmouth caught every day. The past few days we have landed a well sized 16-19” Rainbow Trout.
This makes for a fun change of pace right now and with the majority of Rivers still blown in Northern California, it’s a great option.
Fish are pretty well spread out through the entire lake if you aren’t catching them move your location. Try to find a different bank, for example, a different slope into the water, a different substrate on the bank, fish a different distance from the bank which will effectively change the depth of water you are fishing in.
White leaches with a red or blue underbody have been the most effective.
With the weather warming up next week this will only result in the bite getting better. It also means more runoff into Northern California’s rivers making Shasta a great option, and I do have some available dates next week.
