Fly Fishing Tippet
So, what is tippet? Simply put, it’s the thinnest section of your leader — the crucial connection between your fly and everything else. Typically sold on spools, tippet determines how naturally your fly drifts, how strong your knots hold, and how stealthy your setup appears to fish.
There are two main types: nylon and fluorocarbon. Nylon tippet (often called “mono”) floats, ties easily, and is perfect for dry flies and fast-moving water. It’s softer, more affordable, and forgiving to work with — though it can degrade over time. Fluorocarbon tippet, on the other hand, sinks, resists abrasion, and becomes nearly invisible underwater, making it ideal for nymphing or fooling wary fish. It also never expires — just remember to pack out your scraps and protect the waters we love.
For California trout fishing, we recommend keeping 3X, 4X, 5X, and 6X handy — with finer sizes reserved for slow, clear waters like Hat Creek or Fall River. At Lost Coast Outfitters, we rely on the tippets we sell — tested across California and beyond — to deliver strength, stealth, and reliability on every cast.
