Fly Fishing Leaders

A leader is what connects your fly line to your fly — typically with a simple loop-to-loop connection. Choosing the right leader depends on your fishing style and conditions. The main decision is between nylon and fluorocarbon — each with unique advantages.

Nylon leaders float and are ideal for dry fly fishing. They’re affordable, easy to knot, and maintain about 80% of their strength even when a wind knot (or “overhand knot”) occurs. Because nylon is soft, it isn’t highly abrasion resistant, but that same softness makes it easy to tie and great for floating sections of your setup.

Fluorocarbon leaders sink, are nearly invisible underwater, and resist abrasion far better — perfect for nymphing and other subsurface techniques. However, if a wind knot forms, fluoro can lose up to 80% of its strength, so care and clean casting pay off.

Leader length and taper also play key roles. Shorter, stiffer leaders turn over big, wind-resistant flies like hoppers, while longer, finer leaders offer stealth for wary trout in clear, slow-moving water.

At Lost Coast Outfitters, we stock premium fly fishing leaders for every scenario — from high-floating nylon for dries to stealthy fluorocarbon for deep presentations. The right leader keeps your cast balanced, your fly natural, and your connection strong.
