Yosemite Fly Fishing Report
Rick Mazaira Reports on 7/20/17
The fire is still raging, 45,000 acres - the size of the city of Seattle as of this writing, threatening Mariposa and up the Merced River canyon. A few of us have been evacuated, and containment due to all the dead trees and wet winter contributing to fuel, containment is not in the near future. All is about the same as last week, fish carefully not getting too far away from an escape route as fires of this size can spot and start others quite a distance from the main fire. Thoughts and prayers appreciated as we are caring for our loved ones and our neighbors.
Mokelumne- Snags are taken care of and drifting is good things are hot so hydrate.
Stanislaus- Lot’s of Smoke - Hell’s Kitchen, Herring Creek and small streams are your best bet. The main forks are still a little high, you can fish the edges. Streamers and nymphs are best.
Below Goodwin Dam - 1,300 CFS - Too high to float and fish.
Tuolumne - Lot’s of Smoke! 6,500 @ Merals Pool. Some Tribs are fish-able South Fork is getting in shape.
Lower T below La Grange 5,500 CFS -
Merced- Fire risk is too high
