Trinity River Fly Fishing Report

Trinity RiverNov 20, 20141 min read

Dave Neal, Reel Adventures Guide Service

Trinity River has been tough this week for most people. It’s been cold, it’s been crowded, and there are simply not many steelhead around, at least not many in the middle-upper river around Junction City. Most guides and bank anglers I’ve talked to this week experienced between 0-4 hookups a day on adult fish.

We are, however, seeing a lot of juvenile “half pounders” (these ones are 12”-15” hatchery steelhead). We don’t usually see this many half pounders. Yesterday, I watched many of these trout eating bwo mayflies on top, so maybe throw in a 5 weight rod with some small parachute Adams dries as a back up plan to your steelhead trip? These fish rip pretty well and jump a lot – it might help save a blank day if your cruising the bank and find some rising fish.

Another bit of good news: we are getting a good dose of rain right now!! These additional rains will surly help put a smack down on the reset button and maybe move some fish around. Steelhead fishing… everyday is different… and you never know when that next cast will hook you up. More fish will surly arrive, it’s long season on the Trinity and the wild fish will come!!

I have a few open dates in December 16-19, 22, 23, 30 and January 2-6, 9-16, 20, 21, 29-31. Come see why I like the wintertime on the Trinity!!
