Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing Report

Matt Koles, Gilligan’s Guide Service

Yep, another Pyramid Lake fly fishing report. Why you ask? Because the fishing out there is incredible. Probably the best place to fish in the West right now, that is if you know where to fish and how. Fish are in about 18-30 feet of water and chewing on Tui Chubs, the baitfish of the lake. If you can find the bait balls of Tui Chubs you’ll find the fish. A type 6 shooting head or full sink line will get you down to fish, a boat or tube will help get you out to the fish. You like to tangle with Cutthroat that fight like Steelhead? Ok, then get your shit together and come out to the lake. The Truckee River is not as awesome as Pyramid right now. The Little Truckee, well kinda, when it’s cloudy. The Truckee River just needs some water. We’ll get it, it just may be a while. Fish at Pyramid Lake used to be like pulling in a wet blanket, but that’s not the case with these Pilot Peak strain fish. They chow down on streamers, (Tui-Chub) and they are the apex predator of the Trout World. Do yourself a favor and come out the lake this fall.

Doug Ouellette, Calvada Fly Fishing

The opening week at Pyramid was absolutely awesome! Several anglers reported having exceptional angling. Just about every accessesable beach produced. The key to having a big day is to fish in 20 to 30 ft. of water. A float tube, pontoon boat, or a boat is essential.  A  Tui Chub pattern has been the #1 fly by far.  Get the fly down and retrieve it up- be ready!  There is a great Tui Chub pattern by Mark Tilton in Terry Barron’s book “No Nonsense Guide To Fishing Pyramid Lake”. I highly recommend you get a copy of this book.  When we fish Pyramid we recommend using 12 or 15 lb. Fluorocarbon.  Pyramid has BIG fish.
Remember, with over 40 years of “real time” fly fishing at Pyramid Lake, the guides at “Pyramid Lake Guide Service”  have more experience at Pyramid than ANY other guide service.  Our guides fish on their days off and continue to scout for the best possible trip for our clients.
