Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing Report
Doug Ouellette, Calvada Fly Fishing
The fishing this week at Pyramid picked up with not only good numbers of fish caught but also some MONSTAS up to 18 pounds! The storms that are moving through the area are mixing things up. It is a great time to get after these enormous fish. The north end of the lake has been better for numbers of smaller fish with some fish going 7 to 12 pounds. The south end of the lake has more big fish from 12 to 20 pounds, but fewer fish. Sometimes at Pyramid it takes a ton of casts to hook a trophy. When fishing the lake, try to fish a beach where the wind is blowing at you. Do not be afraid of fishing in the waves, they usually bring in the fish. The best grab has been at first light and in the afternoon until dark.
Suggested fly patterns are the popcorn beetle, wooly buggers in black/red, and in purple/black, tui chub streamers, leeches, Stanley Streamers, #6 black/copper midges, #6 49ers ( red & gold), and red snow cones.
Wind direction and speed is essential when fishing Pyramid Lake. For more info on wind conditions go to www.pyramidlakeguideservice.com - click on the “weather button”.
Tips :
* Always bring a dry change of clothes
* Bring a shovel in case you get stuck in the soft sand.
* Try to stay on the main dirt roads.
* Check wind conditions before launching any vessel.
Good luck, Have fun!
