Lower Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Lower Sacramento RiverMay 21, 20151 min read

Anthony Carruesco, AC Fly Fishing

Insanely good trout fishing still occurring on the Lower Sacramento River. If you like drift boats, big wild rainbows and a bent 5wt, the Lower Sac might be the perfect place for you. Evening Caddis hatches are starting to happen. Some last light dry fly is in order. A lot of impressive fish making it to the net over the past few weeks. I’ve still got a few days open. Call or email if interested..
Check out some killer images from the river from Thomas Goodwin

Shad fishing on the Lower Sac outside of Chico continues to be good. Best fishing has been from about 4pm-7pm with the cooler weather and cooler water temps. There has been some reports of bigger female fish showing up in the 4-5lbs range but I have yet to see any myself. River flows at Ord Bend are around 6000cfs allowing for wading and boat fishing. Wading access is limited on this stretch of the sac but there are a few spots where anglers can park and get into some good wade spots.
Top water bass fishing on the sac has been decent as well. Most fish are coming on frog patterns during low light conditions in the morning and evening. There is also a bunch of small fry in the water so fish are starting to focus on schools of fry on the edges of structure and weed beds as well.
