Lower Sac and Feather River Fly Fishing Report

Feather RiverMar 16, 20181 min read

Ryan Johnston reports on 3.16.18

Lower Sac

The fishing on the Sac continues to impress. The amount of bugs coming off right now is really impressive. From spring caddis, to March Browns, to PMDs, and even baetis in the mix there are all kinds of food in the drift right now to get those rainbows fat and happy. The best part is that we are getting some legitimate dry fly fishing in every day right now. I have been averaging about 5-6 fish on dry flies the last several weeks. For those of you who frequent the Lower Sac know how rare that is to find consistently feeding off of the top. The best fishing has been from 11PM - 3PM each day. Expect things to slow down a bit this week with the rain in the forecast but once the sun pops out again then it will be back to rocking and rolling.

Feather River

There are a handful of spring steelhead on the Feather right now. It seems like the first wave of fish have finally moved in to the river. When I was over there last week it seemed like there were quite a few smaller fish in the system with most of the fish in the 14-18" range. The Feather will continue to improve over the next couple of weeks before we get into the prime time window of late March - April.
