Lost Coast Outfitters Guides

So much of what we do at Lost Coast Outfitters, and as fly fishermen, depends on credible guides. We don't get to spend every day on the water - these guys do, and that's why we rely on their expertise for everything from building our fishing report to helping us arrange trips for our customers. We've spent a while assembling a list of our go-to guides, and we're excited to share with you the Lost Coast Guide Network

We've brought together the best professional anglers in Northern California and beyond to help you book trips easily regardless of where you're fishing. The idea is to have friends on every river that we can personally recommend, and to support local waters and the guides that call them home. As this list continues to grow, we look forward to fostering relationships with local fly shops and guides that will make finding great fishing opportunities easy.

Hogan Brown Fly Fishing

LCO Master Guide Hogan Brown

Hogan began fly fishing from an early age virtually growing up on the banks of the North Fork and Lower Yuba rivers. He began hitch hiking the 5 miles from his house to the Lower Yuba River with a fly rod in hand in Junior High school. He has chased trout and steelhead in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Alberta provinces in Canada. Far from being a trout snob, Hogan has spent considerable time fishing for largemouth, smallmouth, and striped bass and carp on a fly! Hogan has become one of the leading innovators in warm water fly fishing in Northern California.

LCO Master Guide Matt "Gilligan" Koles

Matt began fly fishing the waters of the Tahoe-Truckee Region when he was a kid. As a guide, Gilligan brings to the river over 30 years of experience fly fishing and tying flies for Truckee River trout. Gilligan’s Guide Service runs guided fly fishing trips year round on the Truckee River in California and Nevada, West and East of Reno, and on the Little Truckee River, two of the finest trout fisheries in the West. Guided fly fishing trips are also available to Pyramid Lake in Nevada, home of some of the biggest freshwater trout in the world. A veteran guide, Gill loves to guide anglers of all abilities, and has the equipment to outfit first timers for whatever fishing excursion holds their interest. From wade fishing to drift boat fishing Gill has you covered. If you happen to be after the fish of your lifetime Gilligan will show you the rigs and flies and where to find them.

Trinity River

Northern California Fly Fishing Guide

Trinity Swing Guide : Tom Mahan

The Trinity River is Northern California’s diamond. It’s the number one option to encounter a Steelhead 365 days a year. It boasts the biggest encounter rate for wild and hatchery adult steelhead in the State. It runs appx 160 miles from Trinity Lake to Weitchpec, where it dumps into the mighty Klamath River.

The Trinity will throw just about everything plus the kitchen sink at you. From the long hot days of wet wading for summer run Steelhead with floating lines and long leaders, to dredging the bottom with sinktips and weighted flys in single degree, guide freezing, short winter days.

This feature rich river will test and reward greatly, the angler who thrives on swinging flys with the “outside the box” approach. Although there are many cookie cutter runs for the Spey enthusiast, the Trinity mostly consists of water that holds fish, where it could, potentially be overlooked. This is what makes this River so special!

Jim Stimson Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Guide

LCO Master Guide Jim Stimson

Jim has been fishing since he was a kid, catching bluegill and crappie with his grandfather on the local ponds in Iowa. With his dad, he fished for northern pike and musky in Canada, then yellowtail and bonito in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. After graduating from UC Riverside with a degree in biology, Jim moved permanently to the Eastern Sierra in 1975. He has been fishing the waters along the Eastside and the backcountry for decades. Since completing guide school with Confluence Outfitters in Fall River Mills, he has been guiding the streams and rivers in his backyard, the Sierra. Jim is passionate and enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge of fly fishing.
